Midtown/Westport

Welcome to Midtown-Westport

A collection of historic neighborhoods with a progressive, thriving nightlife district

As one of Kansas City's oldest neighborhoods, Westport has a long and fascinating backstory. Originally named West Port, its name came from the fact that it was the westernmost village where settlers would stop for gear and necessities before venturing out to explore the Kansas area to the west. Today, Midtown-Westport has a longstanding appeal due to it's thriving entertainment district and diverse historical neighborhoods.

Lively clubs & bars, late-night entertainment, and early-morning brunch are key components of this urban, hip, progressive part of the city. This eclectic neighborhood represented by the area from 43rd St to 31st St (S to N) / State Line to the Paseo (W to E) houses many diverse communities for both residential buyers and renters. While Westport and West 39th Street are the predominant nightlife areas, Midtown is home to several of the city's beloved historial communities such as the Volker, Roanoke, Valentine, Coleman Highlands, Manheim Park, Squier Park, and Hyde Park neighborhoods.

What to Love

  • Diverse neighborhoods
  • Hip and progressive
  • Thriving nightlife

People & Lifestyle

Westport & W39th Street come alive at night when residents and tourists flock to the local bars and restaurants. The main demographic is composed of young adults attracted to the vibrant energy, but many families and older adults make up a large percentage as well . Each residential neighborhood has it's own unique flavor & flair, yet also a very strong sense of community identity with opportunities for residents from all backgrounds to interact and enjoy each other.

Both the rental and residential resale markets are very strong in this area as Midtown continues to be a very sought-after locale for those not wishing to settle down in a more suburban environment. The district is very walkable and dog-friendly, and hosts beautiful parks such as Roanoke Park and Hyde Park.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Westport's Bluestem is a low-key restaurant boasting a progressive American menu with set prices. Beer Kitchen is perfect for a late-night meal with their craft beers and signature beer burgers slathered in homemade barbecue sauce. Neighboring West 39th Street has its own fair share of fantastic local restaurants & bars, such as farm-to-table Room 39, a one-of-a kind eatery with elegant food & drink options in a warm intimate setting. You'll defintiely want to visit Blue Koi for innovative Chinese food, and Q39 for "chef-driven" BBQ; both are local favorites. Midtown also hosts The Russell, which boasts a fabulous catering and restaurant menu with indoor and outdoor dining, and Ragazza, the best new Italian place around—complete with a compelling wine list.

Longtime Irish deli Browne's Irish Marketplace sells authentic Irish foods, drinks and baked goods, along with a wide array of  products shipped directly from the Emerald Isle. And don't forget to visit Monarch Coffee for fresh-brewed coffee and pastries, Meshuggah Bagels for KC's version of New York's finest, or the High Dive Lounge to grab a pint with the locals.

Many unique local shops call Midtown home, including the curated interior design gallery Swanky!, featuring refurbished upholstered pieces, local artists, folk art, beautiful and unusual rugs, and designer lamps and lighting. Get lost in the shelves at Prospero's Books on 39th St, a KC staple and local literary landmark.
