The city of Leawood represents a large suburban area located in northeast Johnson County, Kansas approximately 10 miles southwest of downtown Kansas City. Established in the 1920's by retired police officer Oscar G. Lee and subsequently incorporated in 1948, it is known as a premier residential community featuring an inviting mix of both elegant established neighborhoods and newer build communities, high-profile commercial developments, and a vast system of city parks, trails, and recreation facilities. 

 

With over 60 subdivisions, the city encompasses the area just west of State Line Road, beginning at Somerset Drive (79th Street) on the north and extending to 155th Street at it's southernmost edge. Leawood continues to be a very sought after place to live due to it's picturesque tree-lined streets, family-friendly neighborhoods, excellent schools, and close proximity to numerous shops, restaurants, parks, and businesses.

Things to Do

One of the many appeals of Leawood is the numerous parks adorning the neighborhoods, allowing residents ample opportunity to stretch their legs and take in some fresh air. The parks also create outdoor gathering spots for events and special occasions. The Leawood parks system consists of six parks, one greenway, and an 8.2 mile trail system.

 

Gezer Park is a 10 acre park including a walking trail, public art, playground, Havdalah garden, ceremonial fire pit, and other amenities. Gezer Park is dedicated to Leawood’s sister city relationship with the Gezer Region of Israel. Leawood City Park and Tomahawk Park are connected by Tomahawk Creeek Trail, a 4.1 mile paved path meandering along Toamhawk Creek that is part of the county-wide trail system.

Leawood is served by two public school districts, Shawnee Mission & Blue Valley. There are also a few private schools in the area.
